Patellar dislocation can be congenital, traumatic or related to anatomical deficiencies. Patellofemoral problems in childhood and adolescence range from mild maltracking to dislocation of the patella associated with different degrees of pain. Mild problems are dealt with physiotherapy, but recurrent and serious problems may need surgical intervention in order to reduce the patella into the trochlea. Of particular interest to our surgeon is the condition of congenital patellofemoral dislocation, where early reduction of the patella produces normal anatomy of the patellofemoral joint and normal development of the whole knee joint.
