acute limping

Acute limping in children is common.  There are a number of causes which include orthopaedic and non-orthopaedic pathologies. From the orthopaedic point of view most common causes include transient synovitis or injuries. Transient synovitis usually follows a viral infection and tends to resolve with time with no specific treatment required.Transient synovitis needs to be differentiated from musculoskeletal infections (osteomyelitis or septic arthritis) which are less common when compared to transient synovitis but need to be diagnosed and treated as early as possible in order to avoid long-term concequences.

Dr. Zenios has a special interest in musculoskeletal infections in childhood, has published a number of articles and presented papers in international meetings.

Osteomyelitis in children as shown above usually occurs in the metaphysis of long bones.

Septic arthritis results in a swollen joint due to the collection of pus
