Our surgeon examines babies for congenital hip dislocation (developmental dysplasia of the hip) at an early age, in an attempt to identify and treat congenital hip dislocation early and avoid surgical intervention. The risk for DDH in the general population is 1 in a 1000, however this risk increases significantly in children who are born breech, have a first degree relative with developmental dysplasia of the hip or are born with foot postural deformities. Our recommendation is to perform a clinical and sonographic examination of babies at risk are DDH at the age of two weeks, and children with no risk factors between the ages of six to eight weeks.
