botox (dysport) injections in patients with neurological symptoms

Botox (Dysport) injections are used to relax stiff muscles in patients with neurological problems, such as children with cerebral palsy and adults following a stroke. Botox (Dysport) is accurately injected in the muscle using an ultrasound scan. The injection is followed by casting and an intensive rehabilitation programme by professional physiotherapists specialised in neurological conditions. Even though it is possible to perform this procedure with the child awake, we prefer to perform Botox (Dysport) injections with an anaesthetic in theatre. This allows an examination which provides useful information for the future and accurate positioning of the injection. It is believed this method is kinder for the child.
